Public Relations Education Coordinator

POSITION STATUS:  Full-Time, Salaried

Position Purpose

To deliver the district’s vision, “Every person in Porter County engages in an effective waste reduction lifestyle” through messaging concerning:  reuse, recycling, source reduction, composting, household hazardous waste management and general environmental protection.  Also responsible for assisting district personnel in accomplishing all other functions of the district.

Essential Position Functions

Public Relations

  • Establish and maintain relationships with local government entities, civic organizations, schools and trade groups, which include securing speaking opportunities; being a liaison for waste reduction & recycling programs in local government, schools, and businesses; conducting seminars for small businesses dealing with solid waste management issues; participating in special events.
  • Speak with local media upon request; contact local media regarding upcoming events and environmental issues; design advertising material as necessary; write and distribute press releases and public service announcements as necessary; record environmental videos; maintain web site and social media information.
  • Plan, organize, and implement large group gatherings/trade show events; maintain partnerships with local, state and national solid waste professionals; maintain membership in professional organizations to establish networking opportunities and present the district’s advocacy position.
  • Write and administer education grants for district.

Education

  • Recommend environmental curricula and resources that would be most valuable to the district’s vision.
  • Present adult and classroom education programs.
  • Write articles for and coordinate the publishing of the district’s electronic environmental news publication; develop promotional and educational materials for distribution, prepare videos highlighting waste reduction.

General

  • Work with Education Outreach personnel as necessary to guide overall education programs and message as well as oversee duties of interns.
  • Attend meetings and special events as requested by Executive Director.
  • Help plan and maintain annual education budget with the Executive Director.
  • General office duties including: answering phones, email, customer service, and being a team player.
  • All other duties as assigned by Executive Director.

 

Job Requirements and Difficulty of Work

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Administration, Environmental Science, Business or related field, or five (5) years related experience.
  • Oral and written communication skills; public speaking skills.
  • Social media marketing (including videoing & editing); website maintenance skills.
  • Experience in Microsoft Office Suite (including Publisher) and Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • Experience in innovative promotion and public relations; organizing special events; using flexibility and creative problem solving processes.
  • Be highly motivated, self-directed and willing to be a team player.
  • Valid driver’s license as verified by Motor Vehicle Report issued from Indiana Department of Motor Vehicles as well as auto insurance.
  • Submit to a background check.
  • Minimal physical demands.
  • Work hours are standard as noted in the district Personnel Policy Manual with limited pre-approved flexibility.
  • Out of town travel is occasional.

Personal Work Relationships

Incumbent maintains frequent communication with district co-workers, local government entities, civic organizations, schools, trade groups, news media and public for the purpose of exchanging information and coordinating programs.

Incumbent reports directly to Executive Director.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office environment and public setting with minimal physical demands and occasionally works irregular and/or extended hours.  Duties may require frequent travel to events, conferences and meetings.

Compost Site Attendant 

POSITION STATUS: Seasonal, Part-Time

To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed in this document are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

 

Position Purpose

To aid the district in fulfilling its responsibility to the community as related to the composting, bulb recovery, battery recycling, drop off recycling and/or electronics recycling programs.

 

Essential Position Functions

  • Inspect all incoming material for content and volume;
  • Record volume/type of organic material brought to compost sites by residents;
  • Record volume/type of organic material removed from compost sites by residents;
  • Direct site users to proper locations for depositing material;

  Customer service sharing up to date information and guidance regarding rules and regulations;

  • Perform other job functions as directed.

 

Job Requirements and Difficulty of Work

  • Be highly motivated and self-directed.
  • Be able to pass aptitude test.
  • Submit to a background check.
  • A high school education or equivalent.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license as verified by Motor Vehicle Report issued from Indiana Department of Motor Vehicles as

  well as auto insurance.

 

Personal Work Relationships

Incumbent maintains frequent communication with District co-workers, local government entities, small businesses and public for the purpose of information and coordinating program.

Incumbent reports directly to Operator and/or Executive Director

 

Working Conditions

Incumbent will perform duties outdoors and is exposed to temperatures, inclement weather and traffic. Safety precautions must be followed at all times to avoid injury to self and others.

Incumbent will be required to work seasonal hours from late March through early December including all Saturdays, excluding predetermined holiday closings.

Duties are performed at 3 separate locations in Porter County.

Incumbent must be able to lift up to 50 lbs., 10 to 15 times per day/shift.
